Curriculum

P.S.51 uses a Balanced Literacy Program for the teaching of reading and writing. The key components of our 90-minute literacy block are shared reading, guided reading, read aloud, independent study, word study, interactive writing and writers workshop. All of our cluster teachers work in classrooms during guided reading to provide increased instruction.

As an exempt school, P.S. 51 uses the TERC math curriculum. Students are taught how to solve problems using a variety of strategies.

Science instruction is taught using a hands-on, inquiry based model aligned with the NYS state science standards. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will receive 2 periods a week of science with Mr. Soobyiah, the science instructor.

Social studies instruction is taught using an integrated approach aligned with the NYS state standards.

All children participate in art, music, gym and computer instruction. In addition, art and music are incorporated into the reading, writing, math, science, and social studies curriculum.
