Parent Involvement and the PTA

Welcome Parents and Caregivers!

PS51 invites you to become involved in the school community. PS51 depends on you to volunteer your time, donate goods, services or funds to help maintain its high level of programming. Parents/Caregivers make a big difference! Our children benefit by having the school improved. They see a community working together and they feel a part of it. Parent/Caregivers gain friendships and connections and the satisfaction of a job well done.

There are many ways to help. Full-time working parents can accomplish many tasks via phone or email. Those parents who are available during the day are welcome to come to the school and help.

Here are some of the things you can do:

- Help at lunch periods/recess one or two days a week

- Accompany your child on a class trip as a chaperone

- Help in your child’s computer or art class

- Become a Class Parent and be the connection between the teacher, the parents of your child’s class and the PTA (Parent Teacher Association)

- Attend monthly PTA meetings

- Join a committee for fundraising, grant writing, library, website, or health & safety and nutrition.

The PTA (Parent Teacher Association)

The PTA serves to enhance our children’s education and to promote communication and cooperation among the parents/caregivers, faculty and administration. The PTA raises funds to provide materials, equipment, personnel or programming to assist in the education of the children in the school.

The PTA Executive Board governs the PTA according to its accepted bylaws and consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. These PTA positions can be shared by more than one person to lighten the load.

The Executive Board’s duties and responsibilities are:

President or Co-Presidents preside at all PTA meetings and appoint chairpersons for all committees with final approval from the executive board: delegates responsibilities to the other PTA members and encourages participation in all parent and school activities; attends all meetings of the district president’s council and is a core member of the school leadership team; meets regularly with executive board members to plan agendas for general membership meetings; is a signatory on checks.

Vice-Presidents or Co-Vice Presidents assist the president and assume the president’s duties in his/her/their absence or at his/her/their request; is a signatory on checks.

Recording Secretary or Co-Secretaries maintain the official record (minutes) of the meetings; prepare notices, agendas, sign-in sheets and materials distributed; maintain copies and records on site; review and respond to correspondence addressed to the PTA.

Treasurer or Co-Treasurers are responsible for all financial affairs and funds of the association; maintain records of all income and expenditures by the PTA on school premises; is a signatory on checks; makes available financial records for viewing by members upon request for audit; discuss present budget during May meeting; prepare a proposed budget for next year for adoption by the membership at the June meeting.

The PTA has monthly Executive Board meetings and monthly General meetings.

The PTA oversees the various Committees:

Fundraising Committee:

Fundraising is one of the most important duties of the PTA. In our school it helps to support the arts programming. We need people to coordinate our existing events (which are the Family Fall Event, Scholastic Book Fair, Student Photo Day, Spring Benefit Auction & Spring Family Fun Fair) and brainstorm for new ideas.

Health & Safety Committee:

Meets to focus on the health and safety of our children in the school.

Website Committee:

Works to help improve and maintain our existing school website.

Grant Writing Committee:

Works to help research and apply for grants (business and organizations that give money to schools based on a need or project idea) according to priorities determined by faculty and parents.

Nutrition Committee:

Comprised of parents and students and is led by the parent coordinator to address the nutritional needs of the students.

Library Committee: Works to develop and maintain the school library.

CLASS PARENTS:

To further open the lines of communication between the school and home, two class parent representatives are selected from each class. These representatives will contact each parent to disseminate important information such as school activities and school closings. If you are interested in representing your class, please speak with your child’s teacher. This is a great way to “Become Involved.” If your child’s class already has two Parent Representatives contact them and find out how you can help.
