From the Principal Nancy Sing-Bock
P.S. 51 is dedicated to meeting the needs of our diverse and rich multicultural student population. We are a community of learners where all children are encouraged to celebrate their diversity and achieve academic and social success. Teachers are encouraged to develop meaningful dialogues amongst themselves, the administration and the parents. Parents are our partners in the education of our children. Our curriculum from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade is interdisciplinary with an emphasis on literacy. Mastery of content and skills is integrated throughout the curriculum areas. Since we are all learners and subject to various learning styles, the curriculum and teaching styles of our staff are adapted to meet all modes of learning. Through the efforts of our School Leadership Team, we expect our school family to gain greater strength, understanding and fellowship while meeting our goals.
About Our School: Our current enrollment is about 320 students in Pre-K - 5th Grade. The student day runs from 8:15 am to 2:35 p.m. for all students. We are located in the Clinton (Hell’s Kitchen) neighborhood of Manhattan. Our school has a long-standing tradition of excellence. During the 2004-2005 school year we were awarded the “No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School Award.” Our continuing goal is to provide students with a rich, rigorous learning environment based on the New York State Learning Standards. We strive to provide a learning environment that encourages children to embrace learning and to attain the skills and strengths necessary to become life-long learners

I attended PS 51 in the 1950s and am pleased to see that the school is doing so well.
I now live in California, and my wife and I visited the kitchen a few years back and I showed her PS 51.
The schoolyard looked almost the same except for the large multi-colored plastic play area in the far corner.
I still remember all my teacher’s names and if I can be of any assistance with an oral history of PS 51, etc. please don’t hesitate to ask.
Thank you and Good Luck,
RJ McCloskey

In the early 1990’s, my father, John Economides, used to be a principal at this school. I am delighted to see that P.S. 51 is still thriving in excellence.
During the time he was a principal, I was too young to understand the great things he was doing for the school. Unfortunately he passed away in 1997. However, his achievements will live forever. I still hear stories about him from my family, and articles about my father are hung in my house. From what I read, Mr.Economides has turned this school into a paradise for children. I am glad that the news has not changed.
I am now 19 years old and attending college. I plan to become a teacher. I would love to visit the school one day and capture the love my father had for P.S. 51.

I have my Kindergarten graduation with Mr. Economides. I remember his morning announcements…but my cousin Lisa could probably remember it word for word…and we would always say “Thank you, Mr. Economides”…and I always wondered if he could hear the joint thanks from the Main Office hahaha. He was an awesome principal.

I remember Mr. Economides! I attended P.S. 51. He was unable to make it to my graduation in 1995….but he was an exceptional Principal! He knew everybody’s name and relatives! I remember that he would always lean over the piano in the cafeteria during lunchtime. I was deeply saddened when I found out he passed, but I am truly fortunate to have him in my childhood memories.
Sincerely,
Genesis Torres
