We are in the process of having promotion in doubt meetings with teachers. If your child is in this category, you will be contacted and must have a meeting with the teacher and myself or Ms. Myers-Jusko, Assistant Principal. We have many interventions at P.S. 51 to help struggling students. We will discuss with you what we have done to help your child, where your child is performing now and where he/she should be by the end of the school year.
Ms. Djiounas, the 1/2 grade teacher has left the school to have her first baby Congratulations to Ms Djiounas. Isabel Grace was born on January 27 weighing 7 lbs 7 oz. Ms. Sklenarik, a student teacher we had is replacing her for the remainder of the school year. Ms. Benowitz, the 4/5 Grade teacher will be leaving the first week in February to have her first baby. Ms. Altamore, from P.S. 6, is replacing her for the remainder of the school year. We will have a meet and greet in February so you have the opportunity to meet both of them. We wish both of them much happiness as they enter the world of parenthood. Our P.S. 51 school community continues to grow and expand in numbers everyday.
I want to congratulate five students out of fourteen who have worked on the goal of coming to school on time. We had met with the students and parents to work on this goal. These five students came to school 0 or 1 time late. They received awards on Thursday, January 28 during arrival. Thank you families or caregivers for working with us on this important goal. Thank you to all families or caregivers who get their child to school on time everyday. I know how difficult it is since I had to get my three children out of the house everyday from Brooklyn, bring them to their schools in Manhattan and then get to P.S. 51. It was not an easy task.
The Story Pirates/Striking Viking Theatre Program has been working with students in Grades 2-5. They will be performing selected students’ plays on Friday, February 5. We will have two performances that day.
Ms. Cain has been working hard on the Talent Show. There will be two performances on Friday, February 12.
CookShop, the nutrition program we do in 1st and 2nd grade classes, has begun. If you can help your child’s class, please contact the teacher. CookShop is on Fridays. Chinese New Years is Sunday, February 14. The Chinese families are organizing a celebration for Friday, February 12. I will also teach students the lion dance that will be done in all classes. Gung Hay Fa Choy (Happy New Year.) We will have winter break from February 13 – 21. School will re-convene on February 22.

The PS 51 Library Media Center Opening
The opening of the brand new PS 51 Library Media Center was held on December 11, 2009. The guest list included representatives from Christine Quinn’s office, Manhattan Borough President’s office, Dan Feigelson, our Network Leader, Mary Silver, District 2 Community Education Council Rep, and Lucas Shapiro, Housing Conservation. Also present was the Library Committee, the School Leadership Team, and the Student Council. The school chorus performed, the 3rd graders read their poetry and Livan, an ESL student did a special PowerPoint presentation. Click here to view photos of the opening.
P. S. 51 Protests the New Proposed Schoolyard!
Even though the new school will be for 660 students, double the size it is now, the new schoolyard will shrink from 16,000 square feet to 12,200 square feet. The photo shows the decrease in size. The area where the students are standing will be the only outdoor space available for our students. Photo by Barry Johnson. Click on photo to enlarge.
The Enrichment Program
Click here for photos of the Lower Grades engaged in the PS 51 Enrichment Program. The students enjoy cooking, photography, photo booth, board games, origami and arts and crafts.

Wow! This school is doing great! I love to see all the familiar faces and my old classrooms. Mrs Perlas, it’s good to see that you still keep up the “Actions Have Consequences” poster. It shows you really put in and mean what you teach. I love you all see you in January or any up coming events. I may be gone but my love for this school is still as strong!

Hello. I was once a student at P.S. 51. I am 27 years old now and am living in Brooklyn, N.Y. My memories of this school as a child are great. I am happy to see Mrs. Perlas and Mrs. Garcia are still teaching. Mrs. Perlas was my 6th grade teacher and she was the best. I still remember Mrs. Perlas reading us that book, “Hatchet.” Mrs. Garcia was our library teacher and read us so many wonderful books. I love and miss you very much. I love what has been done to the school. It has come a long way. I would like to come and visit. I know the rules must be different now then they were then so let me know when that is possible.

Hi! I was a student at PS 51 from Kindergarten through 3rd grade and I was a kindergarten student of Ms. Catechis in 1989, Ms. Moore 1990 and Ms. Klein for 1991 and 1992. I’m 25 years old now with a 3 year old little girl of my own and I’ve been living in the Bronx with my daughter and Husband. I have a lot of great memories from PS 51 and I’m glad to see how well it’s doing, if we didn’t live in the Bronx my daughter would definitly be a student there.

I must say I really enjoyed the various slideshows-
I was a student at Dear Howe in 1978 for 4th grade and am amazed by how much the school and its mission have improved over the years. I’m also delighted to see all the wonderful conveniences and benefits that today’s PS 51 Students can now take for granted what were either scarce or non-existent in my day.
If anyone would like to know how quality public education can be successfully run, HERE’S HOWE!!! ~Warmest Regards, T. Lacy:-)

I attended PS51 from 1959 to 1961-2.
I am searching for my best friend at the time.
Do you have old year books?.
Her name was Betty Evans and I lost track of her due to a burglary in our house which forced our relocation.
Loved reading your web page

I will miss ps51 so much! I just graduated yesterday and it was amazing. You were right not a dry eye in the building. If any students from PS 51 are reading this, you are going to have so much fun at graduation. You might say, “I won’t cry (blah blah blah)” But you will! It is very emotional.
Hi Brittany. It is great that you are visiting the PS 51 website. I have never seen such an emotional graduation at PS 51. Enjoy your summer. When you get to middle school, just knock them out. Continue being the fantastic student that you are. Make us proud and always come back here to see what PS 51 is up to. Love you, Ms. Norka Garcia

Thanks for such a wonderful web page. My grandson attends PS51, but I live in Texas and can’t see him in person when he is in the programs and performances. Your web site is a wonderful way for me to “attend” those things.
I’m also a teacher and am now assured he is enjoying a wonderful academic experience at PS51.
Thanks so much.

Wow! I was so sad to leave PS 51 because I left all my friends and all the teachers. I want to come back to see everybody. I cried in school two times just because I wanted to see everybody. Good luck 4 and 5 graders, you’ll need it. I want to thank all the teachers for teaching me and helping me when I needed it. Also, thanks for the memories I have of PS 51. It’s the best school I ever attended. The memories I have will be in my heart forever.

I attended PS 51, from 1965 -1971, I only remember a few teacher’s names. Mrs. Panagakos, Mr Economides and Mrs. Goldstein. That was her married name. she got married with another teacher while i attended. The staff was great, because of the years that have passed, make it difficult too remember others, but there were many. I truly enjoyed my school years there, and have fond memories.

I can not believe most of the comments are from students that attended our school. So many memories. I’m going to miss PS 51 when I leave, so will all the fifth and fourth graders (I talk to them). I miss Mrs.Garcia so much.
Dear Nathalie,
Thank you for your comment. Yes, many alumni students view the website and reminisce about old times. Soon you will be an alumni. Always remember PS 51 and all that you have learned and make us proud. I also miss you and all the students at PS 51. Give my love to your classmates.
With much love,
Ms. Norka Garcia

What a great school and great memories. I attended there between 1955 (immigrated from Ecuador) and 1963. I am now 62 years old and as the school song then, quoted “memories bright will linger on”. Too much time has past for me but I’ll always remember Ms Jackson. I’m glad this fine institution is still here guiding our next generation forward.
As the school song started: We love you dear old 51…….
